Iron Furnaces of Lawrence County Book by Lori ShaferThe Hanging Rock Iron Region encompassed Lawrence, Scioto, Jackson, Vinton, Hocking and Gallia Counties in Ohio; and Greenup, Boyd, Carter, and Lawrence Counties in Kentucky. In 1826, when the first furnace was lit in Lawrence County, Ohio, the history of the county and its people would be changed forever. Each furnace would leave its own mark in the sands of time. Each iron master would have his or her own tale to tale. The golden age of iron would end in the early 1900’s, but visitors to the county can still see traces of these monsters of industry. Some of their stories can be found within.
